Young Apprenticeship
The programme was launched Nationally in September 2004. The Partnerships which deliver the Young Apprenticeship
s are tailored to local circumstances, and include organisations such as schools, colleges, training providers and employers. Each Partnership provides students with an enriching range of learning experiences (including 50 days’ experience of work over the two years of the programme) and forms a support network to help you get the most out of the programme.

They offer you the chance to gain a taste of ‘real work’ in a supported way, and to lay the foundations for a post-16 apprenticeship whilst retaining the full range of options for future training or study”

The Young Apprenticeship Programme lead by Rutland County Council, works in partnership with the following organisations:
- Brooksby Melton College
- Casterton Community College
- Queen Eleanor School
- New College Stamford
- The Deepings Comprehensive School
- Uppingham Community College
- Vale of Catmose College
The Apprenticeship is made up of two parts:
- To complete a nationally recognised qualification in your chosen area of study and
- To achieve 50 days work experience over the course of two years on the programme
The Young Apprenticeship subjects currently delivered are:
- Automotive
- Hair
- Hospitality
- Catering.
ROVA – Rutland’s Opportunity for Vocational Achievement
The ROVA programme offers Year 10 pupils in Rutland the opportunity to follow a vocational or work-related course of study either in a local further education college or one of the three community colleges alongside the national curriculum subjects they are working towards in school.
The ROVA project has been developed in partnership between the three community colleges, the three further education colleges (Brooksby Melton College, Rutland College and Corby College (part of Tresham Institute), Stamford College and the LEA. This works with pupils attending one of the partner colleges one day a week (Thursday) for the two years during Years 10 and 11. You would attend whichever college offers the course you selected.
The ROVA programme is designed to give Year 10 pupils a flavour of a real working environment to prepare them for further training or employment at 16. It provides opportunities to look at local industry and work with local employers and should complement the work experience selected by the you during Year 10. However, those of you who intend to follow an academic route at 16 may want the opportunity to investigate different pathways into a career.
The ROVA subjects on offer include:
- Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
- Hairdressing
- Landbased
- Sport & Leisure
- Food Preparation and Cooking
- Construction.
Diplomas
In Year 11, you begin to make some important choices about your future. In September there will be a new qualification: the Diploma. This is an alternative to the traditional GCSE/A level route, but one which keeps just as many options open for you. It could lead to further study, or to a job. Diplomas are not replacing GCSE's and A levels, but gives you a different option, and you can take GCSE's or A levels alongside them.
The Diploma is one of a number of reforms to widen the range of options available to you. They have been developed in partnership with employers, schools, colleges and universities to motivate and engage more young people.
The Diploma is a qualification based around work rather than traditional subjects and you will have opportunities to experience different styles of learning in different environments, with an emphasis on practical activities.
Diplomas are a new suite of qualifications offered at three levels in 14 broad employment sectors. The first five lines:
- Construction and the Built Environment
- Creative and Media
- Engineering, Information Technology
- Society, Health and Development
are being taught in selected consortia of schools, colleges and work based learning providers, from September 2008. By 2013 all 14 Diploma subject areas will be available to all young people.
The Creative and Media Diploma is being delivered in September 2008, Information Technology will be delivered in September 2009.
