A conference for the Voluntary and Community Sector, about the Voluntary and Community Sector and the policies and issues that matter to you.
30th June 2008 at Leicester Tigers Stadium
The sector is going through exciting but challenging times. The government is voicing its commitment to a “Thriving Third Sector” but many organisations are still struggling with issues of capacity and funding. I would like to invite you to attend this event.
Themes for the day include …
- • The Sub National Review will affect governance arrangements in the region – how will the Voluntary and Community Sector make sure it is involved in setting the policy agenda?
- Questions over the future of commissioning in the sector have arisen – will smaller organisations lose out to the nationals when it comes to securing contracts to deliver services?
- Is your organisation involved in Local Area Agreements? This is democracy at the local level and the VCS voice must be heard.
- Are the goals of BME organisations so different from mainstream groups? Is the agenda towards mainstreaming one that should be accepted and worked within or one that should be challenged and fought against? Should we mainstream?
- We all know the arguments for partnership working – but are we doing it in practice or do we just pay lip service to the principles? We have some exciting case studies to show you that we hope will give you some fresh ideas.
This conference is an opportunity for you to learn about and influence a range of Government policy initiatives affecting the sector and listen to our guest speaker, Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector. We will also have an exhibition space for members of EMSP to showcase their work.
Send in the attached booking form to reserve your place and contact us if you would like to discuss or book an exhibition space. Please do send details to any colleagues you think would be interested - these issues are relevant to all parts of the third sector.
I really look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our annual conference. If you have any questions or if you would like to showcase your work in the exhibition area, then contact Ali Haasnoot by email ahaasnoot@emsp.org.uk or by phone on 0115 934 8471.

BBC Children in Need Funding
BBC Children in Need specialises in funding projects which help disadvantaged children and young people aged 18 and under in the UK. This disadvantage could include illness, disability, poverty, distress, neglect, or behavioural and psychological difficulties. We look to fund projects which change the lives of children and young people for the better. For more information on which projects are eligible, see our website www.bbc.co.uk/Pudsey.
Our next grant round deadline is the 30th November 2008, and applications can be made by post or online. This year we are particularly trying to encourage more applications for small grants, as we know these grants can often have a huge impact on children's lives, and it also enables the money our fundraisers have been busy raising to stretch as far as possible.
Please contact our Birmingham regional office for further information or to check eligibility on 01215676707.

Discrimination and or abuse because of Age & Disability is a crime
Have you been discriminated against because of your age or disability? If so, then you may have been a victim of a HATE CRIME.
The police in Oakham & Rutland will investigate any incident in which someone is subjected to abuse (whether that's physical, mental or verbal) if it's motivated by age or disability.
This is now classed as a HATE CRIME which also covers four other areas:-
- Gender
- Homophobic

PC Loyala OVERLUNDE from Loughborough Police is appealing to anyone who thinks they have been a victim of a hate crime to come forward and report it to the police.
He can ensure that it is brought to the attention of a local police officer to investigate or refer the incident to other agencies for their information or action.
He said; "We take reports of hate crime very seriously and will thoroughly investigate any complaint. Officers will do all they can to catch and deal with the people responsible and work closely with other organisations to prevent further incidents. If you think you have been a victim of this type of crime then please go into your local police station to make a report, or ring Leicestershire Police on 0116 222 2222."
